Scarlet Witch #2

Fangirls, from the first couple of pages I was in love with this issue! Why? Because it focuses on Greek mythology. This issue features such characters as the Minotaur and the goddess Hekate. Ah, I love mythologies.

Scarlet Witch 4

So, the minotaur is wreaking havoc at the same time that Wanda decides to go visit Hekate, goddess of crossroads, witchcraft, and many other things. Wanda goes looking for some wisdom and advice.

The conversation between Wanda and Hekate is both story moving and simply profound. Wanda reveals to Hekate that she has changed, trying to make herself new, and that she is taking new medicine for depression. Hekate reveals that she is content in her life, but partially longs for the days of old. Important moments in these conversations are shown in black and white to emphasize the strength of what’s happening.

Scarlet Witch 5 Scarlet Witch 6 Scarlet Witch 7

They discuss the fracture in magic, how strongly they both feel it. Wanda worries she is the cause of magic’s fracture, but Hekate – even though her connection has weakened – doesn’t agree. She informs Wanda about the Minotaur, believing that the broken magic is what summoned the Minotaur back to Greece. Wanda agrees to fight the Minotaur and goes on the hunt.

Scarlet Witch 8

She finds his true identity and heals him, ending the spell that made him the monster. As Wanda ponders who could have used such strong magic to summon the Minotaur, an Irish man has gone to Hekate and destroyed her. And issue two is over.

Issue three is promising to take us to Ireland, my favorite place on Earth. I cannot wait.

A-Force #1

Finally, Fangirls, FINALLY we get to return to one of my favorite series’ of the fall, A-Force. This was a series about some of Marvel’s greatest female heroes (and villains) becoming one team. The team included Carol Danvers, She-Hulk, Medusa, and so many others. I was so happy this series was coming back after the Secret Wars ended, and I cannot wait to see how the A-Force will come together again.

a-force 13

Battleworld is gone, as is the memory of all that existed there. But one still remembers. Singularity, the girl made of stars who came to the A-Force and was saved by them, and saved them in return, survives and remembers. She is in pain and does not know what to do, so she decides to go and find her former friends, the A-Force. But there’s a problem. Singularity discovers after finding Captain Marvel that the women don’t remember her or their team.

a-force 14

She wants to help them remember, but before she can do that the source of her pain, a creature made of anti-matter, materializes. Carol goes to fight the monster, and when Singularity tries to help she senses something else and crashes on Earth. Anti-matter has followed her and is trying to attack her when she senses another friend, Jennifer aka She-Hulk. She doesn’t remember Singularity either, but there’s no time to think on that when Anti-Matter attacks.

a-force 15

Jennifer joins the fight alongside Singularity, as does Medusa. Singularity is pleased to see Medusa alive and well, until Medusa suggests giving Singularity to the Anti-matter creature. And now we wait for issue two.

I’m thrilled. I loved the first iteration of this team and I can’t wait to see how Singularity will bring them back together. Will Medusa change and be a friend again? Will Nico be the one to remember Singularity since they were so close in Battleworld? I can’t wait to see what’s coming.

Captain Marvel Issue 2

First of all, Fangirls, can we just talk about how pretty this comic is? It’s very clean, and the line work is beautiful. Plus the covers are totally jaw dropping. It’s amazing. And the content? Holy guacamole.

CM2-1

Last time we were with Captain Marvel, she and her new team were boarding a foreign ship with Captain Marvel’s star on it. It looked to have some dead aboard, which made it easier to approach and board, but when they got there, something alive was detected.

CM2-3The team goes into a room that stinks, and some slimy dudes fall from the ceiling. They don’t look dangerous, they’re actually almost cute. Kawasaki takes one for study, but they move on. They end up splitting up; the gents go up to what looks like a control room, to see if they can get the ship moving. Since it seems to have been alive, they resuscitate it, and immediately the ship starts attacking.

It kind of really surprised me how quickly the ship took action against the team. It scans everyone (in their separate locations), and attacks. Blast doors slam shut to try to keep them prisoner, while lasers, gas, and giant bug things go off at our favorite crew. They get out, just barely, and when they get back on board their ship, Kawasaki is taken away for questioning. The ship was being piloted from inside their ship, so they need to look into every possibility.

CM2-4

The issue ends with Captain Marvel’s wounds not healing (they usually heal very quickly), and her passing out from what seems to be blood loss. It’s incredibly worrisome; Captain Marvel is super powerful and quite the impressive hero, seeing her taken down is something to worry about.

I think this series is jumping right into the story in the most wonderful way. They’ve got me worried for Kawasaki, intrigued about relationships on the ship (Sasquatch and Aurora, apparently used to be a “thing”), and very curious about the ship that attacked. I guess I’ll have to wait though!

The Mighty Thor #3

So much happens in issue three, Fangirls. Thor and Loki might both have changed. War is escalating. And the last page….well that foreshadows nothing good. So let’s jump in.

Mighty Thor 9

We pick up right where we left off, with Loki and Thor discussing the matters of the realms. Loki assures her that, like Thor, he too has changed. It looks like the authors are going to connect this to the Loki: Agent of Asgard series, which I read and loved. To sum up, it was all about how Loki, reborn once again, wanted to stop being the always liar, always trickster, always bad guy. He wanted to try being the hero, and he proved to himself that he could do it. When I saw Loki coming back in this Thor series, I was worried they would erase that entire story line. But maybe they aren’t. Loki reveals that he wants to work with Thor to end the war. But Jane doesn’t believe him.

mighty thor 10

Loki summons his other selves as protection against Thor, and we get a battle between fem!Loki and Jane!Thor. As they fight, the real Loki tries to convince his other selves that this new path is for the best, but they all speak their distaste at this new leaf. The real Loki doesn’t want to listen and starts fighting with himself, literally.

mighty thor 11

Thor dispatches all of the other Lokis and discovers that Loki was sent as a distraction so the Dark Elves could gather and attack Thor. To save herself and Loki and thousands of Light Elves, Jane truly becomes one with Thor.

mighty thor 12

In the end, Loki is left with an unconscious falling Jane, and Freya is being put on trial in front of Odin. Things are looking grim for our Asgardian deities. Until issue 4 then.

Squirrel Girl Issue 4

Aw nuts, Fangirls. This issue is where stuff gets done, and I’m so excited to be reading Squirrel Girl again. Breaks between reviews are tough, but there are so many comics, and so little time! A Fangirl’s gotta do what a Fangirl’s gotta do.

SG4-1

After being tossed a couple buildings over by Squirrel Girl, the tim warped computer science students have to create a plan. They decide that the best way to defeat Doom is to take away his number one toy; the time machine. Doreen’s suggestion of going to the past and teaming up with dinosaurs is by far my favorite of the bunch, but they decide that the first thing they do should be to actually steal the machine; then they can figure out when to go in it.

SG4-2

So while Doreen goes off to steal a time machine (no biggie), her compatriots work on a failsafe; EMPs. EMP stands for electromagnetic pulse, and is a rather dangerous thing, especially for robots. They build them in hopes of disrupting Doom and anything he has with him.

SG4-3

But when Doreen gets in with the time  machine, Doom catches her; he put the time machine in neutral, so her attempt to get in was pretty futile. He shows her that instead of trying to blend in in the past, he is going to force the past to catch up with him. He’s been working on Doombots and technology that will get these past-people up to speed, and realize him for the genius that he is. It’s a damn good plan.

SG4-4

When the other CS students come in with their EMPs, they are disappointed to find that they don’t work. Doom has activated his Doombots, and it seems like all is lost until a mysterious, Doom-dressed figure comes through the time machine. Guess who?

SG4-5

I’m so excited for the next issue. Every time I read Squirrel Girl, I yell “heck yeah!” at least three times. If you’re not reading it, change that now.

All New All Different Avengers #3

Here’s an interesting tactic that this issue of the series is using, Fangirls. It opens with something that has not yet happened, and the rest of the issue helps lead into what that opening means. So let’s find out why the Avengers are attacking Nova, shall we?

all new avengers 8

all new avengers 9

The Chitauri is closer to his goal than he should be, and even though Iron Man wants Spider-Man, Nova, and Ms. Marvel – all the youths – to sit out, they refuse. Meanwhile, Warbringer the Chitauri and his human ally are working to open a portal in order to bring an army to Earth. The Avengers arrive and attack in a large attempt to end Warbringer’s plan. They get the pieces, and as they lose the fight, Iron Man comes up with a plan to end it all.

Too bad for the Avengers, the human ally Gryphon has powers, and he used them to try and retrieve the pieces of the artifact by calling on zombies. Luckily, Iron Man’s plan works. And it gets him thinking that this group could be a new well oiled team of Avengers. Naturally, everyone signs on. And the beginnings of the All New, All Different Avengers is seen.

all new avengers 10

And there is an epilogue. During the battle, Vision discovered that Sam aka Nova is most likely the reason that Warbringer came in the first place. He agrees not to tell the others, but this puts Sam in his debt.

So what will happen? Will Vision tell Sam’s secret? Will the truth come out another way? Why would the Avengers act so violently towards Sam? We’ll have to wait to find out.

A-Force #2

I am loving this series, Fangirls. So, last we saw Anti-Matter was still hunting down Singularity, and Singularity was trying to find all her friends from Arcadia to help her. Medusa decided to not be helpful and put Singularity into handcuffs.

a-force 16

That is, of course, until Anti-Matter killed one of her Inhumans. Then Medusa decided on a new strategy – fight back. Unfortunately, the fighting does not go as planned. They need someone who can do more than just punch, and Singularity knows just the friend; Nico, a young but powerful witch. They find her in Tokyo and she joins the fight. She’s powerful enough to temporarily unmake Anti-Matter.

a-force 17

Of course, it is temporary, so they need a new plan. Carol Danvers calls up with just the idea; attack it with light, gain more data and information, and find a real way to destroy it. And again, Singularity remembers just the friend. Allison Blare aka Dazzler. She can transmute sound into light, the perfect ally in this plan.

Dazzler agrees to help just as Anti-Matter returns. And the issue ends there. The good news is Singularity has gotten her team back together. The bad news? They’re not a team yet, some of them aren’t even friends.

I truly am loving this series. I’m so glad it’s continued past the Secret Wars and I can’t wait for them to create the A-Force once more.

Scarlet Witch #3

My favorite witch is back, and she’s in my favorite place in the world, Ireland. She continues to hunt the one who has broken magic, and we discover he calls himself the Emerald Warlock. But he isn’t who Wanda has to fight this time.

scarlet witch 9

Wanda travels to Ireland because something is killing the Emerald Isle. She follows the magic to County Wexford and finds the exact spot where a great battle happened and someone powerful was killed. She uses her magic to end the plague, and then she goes to learn just who is destroying magic.

scarlet witch 10

She uses her magic to open the Witches Road and travel through time and space to find the cause. Who she finds isn’t who we think. It isn’t the Emerald Warlock, or at least he isn’t working alone. She finds a version of herself breaking magic and taking revenge. The question is, what is she fighting against? We won’t find out until next issue.

I’ll be honest, this issue felt very filler to me. Plus I was a little thrown off that the art style changed so drastically from the first two issues. But I am interested in seeing what Wanda vs Wanda will be like and why one Wanda is destroying magic.

Captain Marvel Issue 3

$

Fangirls, after the attack on Captain Marvel’s team, something bad happened to Carol. In this issue, she’s experiencing hallucinations, memory loss, and straight black outs.

CM3-1

She wakes up in the medical ward of the ship, confused and upset. Against recommendations, Danvers leaves, in search of Lieutenant Kawasaki. She finds her being interrogated for altering records and triggering an attack on the station. It’s clear that even though Kawasaki’s codes were used for the changes, Danvers doesn’t believe she did it.

CM3-2

Everyone is taking note of how terrible Captain Marvel looks. Brand, who was interrogating Kawasaki, even says to her face that she looks like hell. While trying to talk to Kawasaki, Danvers gets a headache that seems to go hand in hand with a  hallucination. She keeps going to a place that looks like a war zone. And she knows it’s where she dies. But she’s never been there.

Blaming the alien vessel, Captain Marvel goes to a bridge, where her team is assembled around a regenerating bomb from the ship. She tells them to get rid of it, and to get rid of the alien ship. But when they release the clamps holding it in place, nothing happens. They then find that the alien ship is infiltrating their ship, much like a virus. The team starts to fight the cancerous ship, but an explosion happens, and Captain Marvel attacks Sasquatch (assumably without reason), and takes off.

CM3-3

She takes control of their ship, and is hallucinating. She must have attacked Sasquatch under the same pretenses. Brand shoots her, and it takes Danvers down. It’s scary, because a blast that small shouldn’t have affected Captain Marvel, especially so intensely. She wakes up in a containment unit, with a hologram of Brand explaining what happened. She’s stuck there, trying to figure out what’s happening to her.

CM3-4

Her team starts monitoring her hallucinations, and she ends up in a semi-lucid state, telling the team what’s happening to her as she goes through the hallucination. Towards the end of her dream, she realizes that she is no longer herself, she’s Mar-Vell. She’s experiencing his memories, presumably through the transference he did to give her the power.

CM3-5

The alien ship has human-like DNA, and Brand gets knocked out by some mysterious character in the shadows. It’s a terrifying ending to an incredibly confusing issue. I’m very worried about Captain Marvel, her abilities are highly muted; she can’t even pull a panel off of a wall. I’m scared for her, especially since she doesn’t seem to be taking it very seriously. We’ll see what happens next month.

All New All Different Avengers #4

In this issue, Fangirls, Avenger life is back to normal. They have a new base of operations, Jarvis is back, and a new enemy arises. Oh, and possibly a new romance.

all new avengers 11

So, Jarvis has a job at Avengers Headquarters again. And though the Avengers are all there putting everything together, it isn’t what Headquarters used to be. Spider-Man (who is Miles Morales) and Ms. Marvel discuss how they feel about being surrounded by their heroes when the Avengers call goes out.

all new avengers 12

Turns out an artificial hurricane has appeared thanks to Cyclone. And Cyclone is a villain who doesn’t know when to stop talking, as he reveals to the Avengers that he is working for something called Dynasty. So naturally, the Avengers save the people and stop the bad guy as a team and take him away for questioning when Thor acts on her feelings and kisses Captain America before flying away.

all new avengers 13

She does leave the team with a hint as to who she might really be – when asked why she kissed Sam, she replies “Life’s candle burns too briefly not to live in the moment.” Now because we fans know she’s currently-dying Jane Foster, that statement makes sense. But her teammates don’t know that and begin to wonder who she truly is.

As this series grows, it is getting better. It’s great to see a new Avengers team made up of so many awesome characters.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Issue 5

Fangirls, I can not get enough of this comic. Doreen and her computer science major friends are all stuck in the past, fighting Doctor Doom and his Doombots, when someone from the future shows up! It’s hella future old woman Squirrel Girl! Not only is this the cutest possibility, but it’s the best!

SG5-1

Now that far future Squirrel Girl is here, they fight even harder. Tippy Toe has an idea to make everything seem normal for the residents of the present; they make it look like they’re a film crew from Europe, and they’re filming a fight scene! It seems to work pretty well for not only keeping them from looking crazy, but also keeps civilians from getting hurt and changing the timeline.

After quite a bit of butt kicking, old woman Squirrel Girl gets hers kicked, and Doreen tells her that she has to take a break. She doesn’t want anything to happen to future her! So Squirrel Girl decides to take on Doom on her own. They fight in the natural history museum, and when he traps her, Doreen shouts coded instructions at Nancy. Nancy fires a time gun at Doreen, and sends her a day into the past. She does this a bunch of times until she has amassed an army of Squirrel Girls.

SG5-5

Together, the many Squirrel Girls take down Doom. She and he make a pact; if she doesn’t tell anyone about this, he’ll do what she says. She has him take them back to the present, and makes him promise not to mess with time anymore.

SG5-6

The time gun that I mentioned earlier was Cody’s (another computer science student) inheritance. When he figured out what it was, and realized he was doing poorly in classes, he started zapping his classmates. Since the class was graded on a curve, he started doing better. But that’s not fair to anyone. Shame on you, Cody.

SG5-3

This issue was phenomenal. I love reading this comic so darn much, and I’m glad that Squirrel Girl is continuing to kick butts and eat nuts!

Plus this is the cutest panel I can't handle it.

A-Force #3

Time to play catch up with my comics, Fangirls. Life has been so busy. But now I have time, and my catch up starts with A-Force #3.

a-force 18

The battle against AntiMatter continues, with the team using all of the resources possible. When Carol’s science fails, Singularity enlists Nico’s powers to make it so AntiMatter can no longer track her. She takes her friends to safety once more. As the team bickers and argues, She-Hulk takes control and becomes the leader, like on Battleworld.

a-force 19

Singularity takes them exactly where they want to go – to Carol’s low orbit space station. Along with two scientists, Dr. Kawasaki and Dr. Bell, they discuss whether they should kill AntiMatter or figuring out exactly what it is and trying to study it. Dr. Bell speaks up and says that destroying AntiMatter could also destroy Singularity.

They get the chance to speak with AntiMatter, who says it wants to learn, but to learn it must destroy. The fight begins, and Dazzler is seriously injured and dies. Singularity disappears to finish the fight once and for all. And issue 3 ends.

a-force 20

Next issue is the final showdown between AntiMatter and the A-Force. I cannot wait.

Doctor Strange Trailer 1

It’s a week for trailers, Fangirls. First, we had the Fantastic Beasts trailer that showed us the way back into the wizarding world. Now, we’ve been given the first look at Marvel’s next film, Doctor Strange. And it looks fantastic.

doctorstrange

First thing as always, you can view the trailer below.

I am one of the biggest fans of Marvel movies. I love these movies telling these interconnected stories while constantly giving us new characters. The expansion into television and Netflix have also been wonderful choices.

This trailer might be the most beautiful trailer they’ve created. Visually, it’s stunning. When I see a movie, I love seeing it multiple times so I can see new things to appreciate about the cinematography and I adore listening to the soundtracks both in the films and on my own time. The cinematography we get in the 2 minutes above are incredible. It might become the most beautifully filmed movie of the MCU.

As well as the stunning visuals, I love the main four actors in this. Benedict Cumberbatch has really hit the scene since becoming Sherlock – so much so that season four of the show isn’t appearing until 2017. Tilda Swinton is fabulous, simply fabulous. Chitwell Ejifor is such a versatile actor I cannot wait to see what he’ll do with this film, and I’m thrilled he’s joining the MCU ranks. And Mads Mikkelsen as the villain? Yes. Please. I’ve missed him as a villain ever since Hannibal was cancelled. He’s incredibly suave yet terrifying, he’s going to be wonderful.

Overall, even though I’m still bursting with Civil War excitement, I can feel the growing joy for Doctor Strange.

The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence by Stan Lee, Stuart Moore, and Andie Tong

$

Let’s be honest, Fangirls. I picked up this book because it had the word “Zodiac” in big, dark letters across its front. I bought it when the final issue of Zodiac Starforce came out, and that was on my mind (I still need more of that). After reading the leaves, I knew it wasn’t going to be anything like the comic by Kevin Panetta and Paulina Ganucheau, but I figured I may as well give it a try.

zodiac2

Convergence is the first book in the Zodiac Legacy series. It follows a team of teenagers as they meet and unite against Maxwell and the Vanguard Company. The teenagers and Maxwell have something incredible in common; they have all become human hosts to the powers of the ancient Chinese zodiac. Steven, the Tiger, leads with Jasmine, half of the Dragon, as they try to come together to stop Maxwell, the other half of the Dragon.

The story follows them as they recruit and train the Ram, the Rooster, the Pig, and the Rabbit. They have to fight for their lives and those of the rest of the planet as Maxwell seeks to take over.

zodiac1

Though this book was well written and illustrated in an interesting way, it wasn’t for me. It took me about a month to get through the first 200 pages, and after that it really took off. I like my books interesting, and this just wasn’t what I was looking for. I thought the illustrations came at weird points; interrupting the story instead of adding to it, and were bizarre sizes, sometimes taking up 3 pages (which didn’t make sense to me in a non-fold out setting). I do think the story was worth reading, but it just didn’t do anything for me.

Though I do not plan on purchasing the second book in the series (The Dragon’s Return), in glad I read this one. I hadn’t read anything directly by Stan Lee before, so it was good to finally do that. I think it would be a good read for 8th through 10th graders.

Captain Marvel Issue 4

$

Fangirls, a whole bunch of business just went down in this issue. When we last left off, Captain Marvel’s powers were failing, they were being attacked by a virus-like ship, and it a new ship was broadcasting “Death to Hala” on repeat at them. Seeing as Captain Marvel wears the Hala star on her uniform, and their whole dang ship is shaped like a Hala star, things were not looking good at all.

CM4-1

One of the first things they do in this issue, is to evacuate the ship. They send everyone other than a skeleton crew home; as few casualties as possible is the goal. They also destroy the virus ship, returning some power to Captain Marvel. After that, she takes her Alpha Squadron out to go after the incoming ship. They soon learn that the ship’s shields are impregnable, and must retreat.

CM4-3

They take a pilot with them, and when he comes to, Carol explains to him that they aren’t going to hurt him; they’re actually going to fix him up and send him on his way. They’re hoping that this olive branch gesture will help them to gain some of the attackers’ faith and confidence, showing that they are not the Kree, and are not out jut to kill. But when they send the pilot back, he gets shot down by his own mother ship.

CM4-4

The issue ends there, with Captain Marvel trying to figure out another back up plan. I’m honestly quite worried about them; they’re being attacked by creatures who think they’re Kree externally, and by some mystery saboteur internally. A lot is happening, and I’m worried that it’s all going to hit the fan harder than usual far too soon.

All New All Different Avengers #5 & 6

The writers and artists of this series really know how to make covers look ominous. I mean just look at this cover. It’s one of the great things about the series.

all new avengers 14

We open 24 hours ago (I assume this means from the cover) and see the Vision giving himself updates, and then destroying evidence that he gave himself an update. Four hours ago, Kamala is writing Avengers fan fiction with her friends when she has to go to an Avengers meeting. She catches a ride with Spider-Man.

all new avengers 15

Two hours ago, the Avengers appear in a battle against the Mad Thinker and his Dreadbot. Vision and Ms. Marvel fight the bot together. As Ms. Marvel finishes the fight, Vision gets a creepy look.

all new avengers 16

Turns out his updates are to playback anything he sees. And I think he can manipulate it as well…he shows the Avengers’ Ms. Marvel fighting the bot with zero regard for the civilians. Iron Man tells her she is no longer an Avenger, and she leaves just as Nova arrives. She tells Nova what happened and Nova goes in to confront the Vision and all of the Avengers. Unfortunately, a priority alert appears and Nova has gotten himself kicked out of the Avengers as well. And again, Vision gets that terrifying look.

The priority alert sends them to fight Equinox, a villain who can control fire and ice. But not just Equinox, all the Equinoxes from the future. They discover that Kang, conqueror of time, is behind everything, and Vision turns against them all. He knocks Captain America and Thor into a portal, and Mjilonir doesn’t follow them. As more Equinox appear, Sam discovers Thor’s true identity. And the issue ends.

So….why is Vision evil now? Why? A lot of why. It seems the next issue answers that question.

Kang is back. Thor doesn’t have her hammer during a battle. And Ms. Marvel and Nova were kicked out of the Avengers. Nothing is going well for the Avengers. Plus, once again, we get a stunning but ominous cover. So here we go.

all new avengers 17

Kang isn’t completely Kang. Something happened to splinter him, and this version wants to find a way home. He using the Vision to complete his plan. Nova finds Ms. Marvel and tells her about the Vision blackmailing him. They decide they need to go and help the remaining Avengers.

all new avengers 18

Kang has been after Thor’s hammer, hoping it can take him home since it can travel through time. Sam picks Jane up to try and help her reunite with the hammer, learning the truth about her.Sam’s plan is to take Jane to the Mjolnir of the future, hoping it’s exactly where she dropped it in the past. She calls it to her as the battle in the present rages on. Spider-Man comes up with a brilliant plan to act as though he’s been controlled by Kang, which reveals the present Equinox. He destroys that one and the others disappear.

all new avengers 19a all new avengers 19b

Sam gets the hammer into Jane’s hand, Iron Man reboots Vision’s systems, and Sam and Thor return to the fight against Kang. As Kang attacks, the Vision wakes up and fights Kang. Thor grabs the hammer from the future and the hammer from the present and creates a paradox to destroy Kang…this time. Vision apologizes for what he has done to the team. Vision goes off to reflect on what’s happened, and Sam and Jane get to connect outside of the Avengers. And issue 6 is over.

When issue 7 appears, we’ll be in the middle of the Avengers Standoff at Pleasant Hill event, which I’m starting next. So we’ll see how that goes for our team.

Captain America Civil War

Fangirls, it is 11pm on Thursday night. I’ve just seen Captain America Civil War. And I have so many thoughts and emotions. It’s a roller coaster ride, to say the least. I promise, this review will be spoiler free. Zero spoilers given here.

civil war 4

In case you don’t know, Civil War is a culmination of everything before it. The government feels that the Avengers have become too powerful and want to put them in check under the Sokovia Accords. Basically, the Avengers would all be under one roof and be told where to go and when to go. Tony agrees, hearing ghosts from the past, while Steve feels that under the Sokovia Accords their free will would be diminished. Each Avenger takes a side, and there’s slight diagreements. The disagreements only escalate when Steve’s best friend, Bucky Barnes, is accused of a terrorist attack. Steve is determined to find the truth, find Bucky, and help his best friend. The other Avengers? They don’t all see Steve’s vision.

civil war 5

My favorite film in the MCU is Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I love everything about it, from the writing, to the directing, to the acting. Everything to me was incredible. This movie was done by the same team; Joe and Anthony Russo, Christopher Markus, and Stephen McFeely. And I know at least the Russo brothers are staying on for Avengers Infinity Wars. And I couldn’t be happier with this team. I believe that even though they’re writing comic book superhero movies, they do their best to make them as real, as human, as possible. You connect so well with the characters. You feel their hardships. You go on this journey with them and it all feels so real. I absolutely love them as a team and I cannot wait for what’s next from them.

And of course, the acting as ever is amazing. Especially the newcomers Chadwick Boseman and Tom Holland as Black Panther and Spider-Man, respectively. Black Panther was amazing. I am so ready for his solo movie to come out, I need a time machine so I can go into the future and see it now. And I think this might be the best most fun Spider-Man yet. They kept him light and child-like, because he is. He is a teenager thrust into this insane world. And he is so well done all around.

civil war 6

I could go on and on about how much I loved this movie. It’s going to take me a while to process everything I witnessed, and I know I need to see it a few (million) more times. But if you love the MCU and Captain America, this is definitely the movie for you.

When last we saw Thor, she had returned to being Jane Foster in Loki’s prescence. And Odin is still hating everything to do with the new Thor. Malekith is causing galaxy wide war. So all in all, everything is going terribly.

As she falls, Jane reaches for Mjolnir, finally getting a hand on it and becoming Thor once more. The queen of the light elves comes out to end the war once and for all, against the warnings of Thor. She invites Malekith to a peace talk while her people escape to safety. Malekith forces Thor and Loki to stay outside, in the presence of Laufey.

Malekith and the queen, meanwhile, discuss the peace. Malekith says he only wants to unite the elf kingdoms once more, through a marriage. The queen does not agree, and finds that the Enchantress has infiltrated her kingdom. The “wedding” happens, and Malekith tells Thor that she should return to Asgard for the trial.

The trial of Freyja begins with Freyja standing up to Odin, much to Odin’s anger. Outside of the great hall, a crowd gathers to fight and free Freyja. As Odin begins to give her sentence, Thor and Loki burst in together. And the battle between Thor and Odin begins, as issue 4 ends.

Oh man. Next issue is going to be explosive, Fangirls. Explosive.

Freyja regrets that a civil war has begun in Asgard, but knows that she must fight it and win it nonetheless. She reveals that Loki was acting as a spy inside Malekith’s council of villains (please let him stay good, character growth is good people) and urges the others to trust him.

Malekith, meanwhile, succeeds in taking over the realm of the light elves and plans he next conquest. Thor sees what is happening in the galaxy, but cannot help with Odin attacking her. Everything comes to an end though as Loki betrays Freyja (*hangs head in sadness and frustration because whyyyyy*) and kills her. Odin carries her away and his evil brother sits the throne as regent, making a deal with Malekith through Loki; Malekith can attack any realm he likes so long as Asgard stays off his list.

Meanwhile on some space pod thing, two creatures discuss a prisoner who suddenly began to scream for his mother. It is the former Thor, who apparently sensed his mother’s death. And issue 5 ends.

I wasn’t wrong, this was pretty explosive. A lot happened and there’s a lot still to happen.

Squirrel Girl Issue 6: Animal House Part 1

Guess who is behind on Monday Comics? If you guessed me, the girl whose wifi isn’t working properly and is super tired at 5am, then you guessed correctly. Monday’s are always tough, because I’ve taken over for an early morning person at work, and Mondays are the earliest of days. I’m not super into leaving my house at 6:45am, but I am all about getting done by 4pm. Sadly, the early mornings have put me way behind with writing, and I’m sorry about that. But I’m going to do my best to get back on top of that.

Animal House Part 1 is the first issue that features Howard the Duck in Squirrel Girl’s series. It starts with him stealing Mew (Nancy’s cat), and when SG goes to stop him, he explains that all cats look the same to him (racist). Not too long into their conversation, Kraven the Hunter shows up, throws a sack over Howard (who has given Mew back), tosses Squirrel Girl, and rides off out of the city, to his mystery benefactor’s mansion.

Inside the mansion, Squirrel Girl finds out that the cosplay Doombots are the least of her worries. The mansion is home to Shannon, a woman whose divorce has left her with too much money and rage. She’s taken it out on anthropomorphic animals, because they are a legal grey area when it comes to hunting. That’s why she wanted Howard. He’s not alone in there, though. Rocket Raccoon, Beast, and a couple others are already caged up, but after Squirrel Girl trashed the mansion and Kraven stands up for her, they join the hunted. The issue ends with them realizing that the hunt has begun.

I thought this was a rather interesting issue, because while it mashed together several characters from around the Marvel Universe, it featured an unknown villain. I thought that was an interesting choice. I also like that Kraven and Squirrel Girl are cool with each other. But that wraps it up for today. I hope you fangirls have the best Monday you can, and do something fun today!

A-Force #4

It’s time to return to my favorite team right now, the A-F0rce. Last time, Dazzler was killed and Singularity decided to fight AntiMatter on her own. Let’s not waste any time seeing how this turns out.

A-Force 21

Dr. Bell, one of Captain Marvel’s team, has come up with a plan to stop AntiMatter. But it still means killing Singularity. She’s trying to figure out how not to kill her when they discover that Singularity has gone off to fight on her own. The team goes out to help her, and to kill AntiMatter.

They get the bomb inside of AntiMatter, but they hesitate, not wanting to kill Singularity. Amazingly, Dazzler arrives with the device meant to save Singularity. Dazzler protects Singularity as the team destroys AntiMatter. Everyone is safe and the enemy is gone.

a-force 22a a-force 22b

Dazzler has no idea how she was able to come back to life. And it isn’t the first time this has happened. She-Hulk knows Dazzler is about to cut herself off from the world again and offers her an alternative; stay with this group of women who know a thing or two about going through traumas like suddenly coming back to life.

a-force 23

Singularity and the team gather and wonder what will come next. Singularity reveals that they were once called the A-Force, and that even though AntiMatter is gone, other things have arrived. They agree that these new things must be checked out, and things return to normal for Singularity. She-Hulk and Medusa argue over who is in charge. The others just hang back and have their own conversations. Singularity takes them to thing she can sense is the strongest. Meanwhile, somewhere else, AntiMatter fragments possess humans. And that is the end of this issue.

The team is back together! And the story will continue. I’m so happy and I can’t wait for more!
