Squirrel Girl Issue 8

There’s nothing quite as fun as Squirrel Girl.

sg8-2

So, Nancy Whitehead is in Asgard with Thor and the Odinson, Squirrel Girl is working with Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boi, and I’m reading a fantastic comic that I never want to put down. It’s a pretty great day. Nancy is having a pretty great day too, because Loki just showed up and admitted that he maaaaaybe had something to do with Ratatoskr getting out, so it’s great that he’s taking responsibility for that. Also, he turned his head into Catthor and is wielding Mewnir, so this issue is phenomenal.

Back on Midgard (aka where the party’s at), the animal themed heroes are fighting Ratatoskr and not doing so hot. Ratatoskr uses her mind control on Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boi, and the two of them attack Squirrel Girl. She lifted Spider-Man’s web slingers back at the Avenger Mansion, so she thwip’s them and Ratatoskr into their respective places. On a less great note; Ratatoskr has given all of NYC the “Squirrel Girl is bad” mind control, so they all set her free and attack.

sg8-1

Luckily, right as Ratatoskr is about to get SG all mind controlled, Thor, Nancy, Odinson, and Loki show up with Bluetooth earpieces. They give one to Squirrel Girl, then work together to defeat Ratatoskr. It’s super rad, and I love it.

The comic ends with Nancy getting a lesson in squirrel speak, so she can talk to Tippy Toe when they’re together without Doreen/Squirrel Girl.

sg8
This comic is so adorable, but also powerful I can’t handle it. When Squirrel Girl was trying to defeat Ratatoskar, she told everyone that their insecurities don’t make them bad, they show them what to work on, and in turn, increase power. When you know what you want to improve, it’s easier to become confident and powerful. It was such a great speech. Plus the comic is all about acceptance; they’re all buddies working together at college and as superheroes. I love it. So go read Squirrel Girl, their second #1 comes out next month and it looks pretty dang rad.

A-Force #1-3

So, Fangirls, I have finally caught up on my stack of comics and I want to discuss one I’d been looking forward to for a while; A-Force. And I am not disappointed.

Some background; A-Force comes out of the current Secret Wars. In the Marvel universe, the multi-verses were colliding. One now survives – Battleworld, created out of nothing and now ruled by the god who created it, Victor Von Doom. Obviously, in the actual Secret Wars series a lot is happening since some of our favorite heroes and villains from the multi-verses have survived and found their way to Battleworld. With the Secret Wars happening, we’re getting series within that world. And one of the new series is A-Force.

The A-Force is a team on the island of Arcadia comprised of only female kick-ass heroes, including Jennifer Walters’ She-Hulk, Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel, Nico Minoru’s Sister Grimm, Alison Blaire’s Dazzler, America Chavez’s Ms. America, Medusa of the Inhumans, Jessica Drew’s Spider Woman, and Loki the Mistress of Secrets. The cover of the first issue shows many more on the team, but these are the women that the first few issues are focusing on.

a-force 1

The team are charged with protecting Arcadia and guarding the borders, since according to Doom border-crossing is against the law and is the first law not to be broken. Sadly, during the first battle we see, America Chavez breaks that law and is sentenced to banishment. This obviously upsets the whole team, but it hits Loki and Nico hardest as they all lived together and were very close.

a-force 2

a-force 3

Nico runs off on her own to mourn the loss and finds a mysterious girl made of the night sky. The girl doesn’t speak, but she does have a power. She can open portals to the multiverses. And through these portals She-Hulk discovers that there is a traitor on Arcadia using this new girl as a scapegoat. And the A-Force must scatter as they are all labeled traitors to Doom. The team must scatter in order to find the truth, and hopefully rescue one of their own.

a-force 4

I read the first few issues quickly, and I cannot wait to get the next one. I love seeing these characters come together, make a team, work as a family. I really hope that after the Secret Wars end, some form of this team continues on. An all female avengers, best friends and true family, is what I was hoping for from this new series, and I was so not disappointed. I don’t want to see it end once the Secret Wars end.

Carol Corps Issue 1

Much like my ending with Black Widow, I’ve really been putting off picking up Carol Corps. I really loved Captain Marvel, and I feel like nothing can replace the void that has been left by both her book and Widow’s. But when I picked up Carol Corps issue 1 yesterday, I was very into it. It may be because Kelly Sue Deconnick still has her hand in it, but whatever it takes to get me into it, I’m alright with.

cc1

This issue introduces us to Doom’s Battleworld. As a result of the multiverse being destroyed, two earths merged into one; lead by Victor Von Doom. I did not keep up with the event that merged earths, so all of this was an introduction to me, and I’m quite alright with that.

Captain Marvel leads a squad of fighter pilots; the Carol Corps. They are led by another, and everyone is led by Doom. It’s an interesting hierarchy, seeing Captain Marvel as a gift from Doom to help the fighter pilots is very bizarre to me.

CC1-flight

While out training one day, the Carol Corps see that Hydra has come into their territory (in this earth, Hydra has their own area that they should be staying in), and as the Carol Corps go to take care of it, the Thor Corps bursts in, clearing the area.

As the ladies head out, Captain Marvel is stopped by Kit, now a Thor. For those who followed Captain Marvel’s most recent solo book, Kit is also known as LT Trouble, and is the daughter of one of Carol’s friends. They talk, briefly, and Kit mentions that Doom forged her hammer from a star in the sky, even though everyone has been taught that after the sky is just the void, and it is all controlled by Doom.

cc1-kit

This starts Carol on questioning some stuff, even her orders from her superior! She is to take the Corps out to take down a gang of rogue Ultrons, but Carol doesn’t want to. When they get to the area, they see that the Ultrons aren’t flying, but using a boat. Upon further inspection, Captain Marvel realizes that they aren’t Ultrons at all, they’re humans.

Her Carol Corps shoot their weapons to follow orders, but Cap dives in and (barely) saves one man. She’s seen bringing him in to her bunker (where the rest of the Corps has been worrying about her) and the issue ends with them all worrying about this stranger.

I found this to be a very strong first issue; it had action and excitement, but left enough space for me to want to come back. It was definitely interesting, and I recommend you Fangirls start picking it up.

Jessica Jones Full Trailer

Netflix and Marvel released the first full length trailer for their Jessica Jones series, coming in November. They’ve already released one series of the planned five – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron First, and The Defenders – and the first season of Daredevil was incredibly well received. I reviewed it here. Well now, the new two and a half minute trailer for Jessica Jones promises to go just as dark and gritty as Daredevil, and it looks absolutely fabulous.

Jessica Jones (2015) Poster

Krysten Ritter stars as Jessica Jones, a woman in Hell’s Kitchen starting business as a private investigator. She’s hiding a few things though….like her superhuman abilities, and a past that, as much as she tries to hide from it, comes back to haunt her. She was used by a man named Kilgrave (David Tennant) who can control people’s minds and make them do anything. And Kilgrave is back for his favorite subject.

The full length trailer was preceded by smaller hints at the story and life of Jessica Jones. They were all between thirty seconds and a minute long. They started off by showing a basic day in the life of Jessica, waking up at three in the afternoon, kicking everyone’s ass in a bar, typical normal days. The last short one was narrated by Kilgrave as Jessica put up a mural of pictures that make his face. That one, the most important of these small trailers, can be seen here. And the new full length one can be seen here.

I cannot wait for November 2oth. I love the Netflix/Marvel pairing that is happening. Netflix is allowing these stories we normally probably wouldn’t get to be told in their proper, dark, true forms. It’s amazing and absolutely perfect.

A-Force #4

Fangirls, issue 4 of “A-Force” told us who betrayed the team and what she will do to get the power she desires.

As you may have guessed, the traitor was…Loki! Surprise! Except, not really cause it’s always Loki. Anyway, yes, Loki opened the portals that caused the A-Force to break the laws and become fugitives. But She-Hulk has already figured that out, seeing the rainbow bridge through one of the portals. She gathers the remaining A-Force members and they go kick some Loki ass.

AForce4-1

But, naturally, Loki isn’t done yet. She declares that if she can’t kill the A-Force herself, she’ll ensure that someone – or some things – can. She breaks down the wall that keeps out all of the monsters and lets in the Marvel Zombies.

A-force-4-zombies

A couple of important things. One, this time Loki doesn’t seem like the heartless villain. She actually mourns the losses of the members of the A-Force, her friends. And she does what she does because she thinks she would be better in power than She-Hulk was, and instead of talking it out, she betrays those closer to her.

Two, the end of the issue said “To Be Concluded”. Please just mean that this particular story line is ending and not all of the stories of all of team. Please. I love this series, I love that it’s these amazing women working together and kicking some serious butt, and I don’t want to see it end.

Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps Issue 2

Fangirls, this is a gorgeous and intense series. Two issues in, and I’m concerned about characters other than Captain Marvel, because they’re well written and shown as important. It’s wonderful seeing not just Carol written well, but a whole team of women.

CC2

In issue two, it’s released that the saved man is Captain Rhodes, whom you may know as Rhodey. He was a big part of Carol’s life in DeConnick’s Captain Marvel series, and is now getting involved on this bizarre Doom planet.

Carol brings in a doctor to check on him. They find that he has an infection, so the doctor leaves some antibiotics for him. She also leaves a warning; it’s dangerous to be hiding a fugitive right under the Baroness’s nose.

CC2-1

The Carol Corps devise a plan; have their planes retrofitted as rockets, fly into the void (sky), and see what lies beyond. There are many suspicions that it isn’t full of nothing. But at the end of the issue, when Helen decides to take hers out for a spin without clearance, they find out that the rockets aren’t ready. The issue ends with an explosion, as Helen’s rocket doesn’t make it too far off of the ground.

This issue was wonderful, because Helen’s death took me by surprise, and showed me just how much I cared about her (which I honestly didn’t really expect). It’s also nice to see that it was Rhodey that was rescued from the wreckage, and I’m excited to see more of his interactions with Carol. I don’t necessarily want them to fall in love, but I’m excited to see them together more. Altogether, it was a great issue, and I can’t wait to pick up the next ones when I finally get back to Earthworld next weekend!

A-Force #5

Fangirls, the final issue of A-Force came out, and it did not disappoint. There are a couple things about this ending that I love, so let’s get started.

Issue 5 picks up right where 4 left off, with the battle to save Arcadia from the zombies beginning. It’s first panel, however, is not the battle; it’s something beautiful. It show the four main faces of the A-Force as She-Hulk narrates what Arcadia and the A-Force mean to the Battleworld.

a-force 9

She calls all of the people of Arcadia to stand together against the zombies, and says that anyone who stands with her will be a part of the A-Force. And Arcadia listens. We see some Marvel favorites join the fight, including various X-Men, Spider-Gwen, the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Mockingbird, and so many more.

a-force 10

Nico is pulled from the battle by the Star Girl, who tries to tell Nico what she is planning to do by revealing her name – Singularity. She returns Nico to the ground before bringing all the zombies and all the enemies of the A-Force into herself and causing them to disappear.

a-force 11

The battle is over, the A-Force is stronger than ever, Loki will be brought to justice, and Singularity lives on somewhere in the reaches of space, always remembering her friends. And the best part of this ending? The last page showed that the A-Force will return in December with an all new story.

a-force 12

I’m so glad A-Force isn’t ending. One, they’re a great team and with these apparent new additions of basically all of Arcadia, they’ll be even better. Two, the writers did well making these characters a family, and I love stories that can take a group of unrelated characters and make them a family. So in December I’ll see you all again with the continuing story of the A-Force.

Captain America Civil War Trailer and Poster

Marvel fans got a surprise recently as the first Captain America Civil War trailer was released. It debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live when Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans appeared together. I apparently couldn’t stay up, try as I might, but I caught it a couple times the next morning. But Marvel wasn’t done at the trailer; they released three posters as well.

civil war 1

Above is one of the three released posters. And it’s gorgeous. In Civil War, some event (they’ve altered it from the comics, which I’m fine with, I’ll discuss that in a bit) causes our beloved avengers to break into two opposing groups. One side is led by Captain America, and the other by Iron Man.

The tensions between these two alpha leaders has always been present, but really built up in Age of Ultron and will reach breaking point in Civil War. A few months ago, Marvel revealed which of the avengers are on either side. Team Cap includes Falcon, the Winter Soldier, Sharon Carter, Hawkeye, and Ant-Man. Team Iron Man features War Machine, Black Widow, Black Panther, and the Vision.

Below, you can see the first trailer for the film, featuring our first look at Black Panther.

So…that’s exciting, right? Our favorite avengers fighting each other instead of side by side. This is gonna be an emotional one.

As I said, the creative team seems to have changed the reason for the Civil War a bit. In the comics, an event by some Young Avengers causes the deaths of many innocents. The government calls for all heroes to be registered, and the battle lines are drawn. Here, though I heard there will be an event, it seems that the war is more triggered by Steve trying to help, save, and protect his best friend Bucky. This makes me so happy. One of my favorite relationships in the movies and comics is Bucky and Steve. Winter Soldier absolutely broke my heart, and I have no doubt that Civil War will as well.

civil war 2

civil war 3

Here are the other two posters, and I guarantee when I see one in theaters for the first time I’ll openly gasp and run to it. The posters are gorgeous and I’m so excited. Captain America Civil War opens May 6th, 2016.

The Mighty Thor #1

A while ago, the Thor we all know and love lost his worth to hold Mjolnir. The hammer was abandoned on the moon, left there until another worthy member of the universe could be found. And one was found. A woman who has proven herself worthy, even to the original Thor. Her story continues in this new series, The Mighty Thor.

mighty thor 1

Ok, let’s get spoilery. I can’t really talk about this series of Thor without saying who she is, especially since this series deals with her enemies as both Thor and her mortal self. So, in case you don’t know, the new Thor is…Dr. Jane Foster. And Jane’s main enemy is the cancer inside of her.

mighty thor 2

She tries to fight it as best she can, knowing the chemo therapy isn’t helping the way it should, feels that it makes her weaker. But when she wields the hammer, the chemicals leave her body and she feels better than she’s ever felt. But the hammer can’t cure her, it can only make her feel better.

mighty thor 4

Jane has an otherwordly job, as a senator in a galactic congress. She represents Midgard in a council of representatives to try and keep peace between the ten realms. But currently, the congress is afraid of the All-Father, who is hunting for this new Thor.

mighty thor 5

As Thor, Jane has to contend not only with the All-Father’s wrath – who is hunting this new Thor in order to get his son’s hammer back (his son, by the way, has come to terms with losing his hammer and supports this new Thor) – she also has an arch enemy in Maelkith, leader of the Dark Elves who is determined to start an all realm war.

might thor 3

And that sums up the first issue. I can’t wait to see how her story unfolds. I loved the series that introduced her and I am loving this series. I hope issue 2 comes out soon.

Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps Issue 3

$

Fangirls, this stuff is too good. Last issue, Helen took her ship out too soon, and it blew up. Luckily, Captain Marvel has the quickest response time ever, and started this issue by saving her butt. She got in and grabbed Helen before she suffered too much more than a broken arm. But now, the entire base knows something’s up, and it’s unlikely that they’re going to let that slide.

CM3-cover

As soon as Captain Marvel is back on the ground, she’s shouting orders. Thodey’s job is to grab the go-bag and wait quietly, while the others get their planes -turned-rockets ready to go. As they head out, they can hear the alarms going off around the base, and worry a bit about what’s going to happen. It’s time to go, though, so everyone takes off except Cap; she heads back to their bunk, grabs Rhodey, and gets out of there.

CM3-2

The leader finds out exactly who is leaving, and just how serious the situation is. She sends out another squadron, and tells them to take the Banshees down, no matter the cost. As the attack sets in, the ladies “do the thing;” they let the attackers think they’re going to be able to hit them, but move so the opposing squadron hits themselves. I think the best example of Captain Marvel’s personality, is in this scene. She tells her attacker (Black Eyed Susie) that not only will Susie not be able to hit Cap, but that Cap won’t blast her. Even when she is being attacked, Captain Marvel doesn’t kill just to show that she can.

They get out, and to an island Rhodey suggested. There, Cap explains to him that they were the ones who destroyed his ship. They hold a brief ceremony for his team, and then,Cap hears something, and takes to the sky. Once again, they’re under attack, but bigger guns have been brought out. Well, maybe not guns, just hammers.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Issue 1 (Again)

Fangirls, why is marvel doing this? Why are they sending out new #1s? It’s cruel, and irritating, and to be honest, it doesn’t really seem like things have changed. Squirrel Girl is now in her second year of Computer Science school, has moved out of her dorm into an apartment with Nancy, and it seems like things are pretty run of the mill.

SG1-coveragain

My favorite new thing, so far, is Squirrel Girl’s outfit. She’s wearing a long sleeve shirt with a skirt, now, and it’s super adorable. But she’s working more with Koi Boi and Chipmunk Hunk and Nancy.

Since she’s moved in with Nancy, Doreen’s mother wants to meet. So they do, and Maureen (Doreen’s mom) tells Nancy all these amazingly embarrassing stories, and they head back to the apartment. On the roof, they get “attacked” by a mostly metal man, who is holding Mew and Tippy Toe hostage!

After takin him down, Doreen realizes (with Maureen’s help), that maybe the robot man wasn’t really attacking them. His technology is very old, and programmed with Hydra info, so Nancy and Doreen take him apart, and give him a new body. It’s a pretty great montage.

After they put him back together, and wake him up, he explains that Hydra programmed him, so he didn’t really mean all of the stuff he said about “murder” and “annihilation.” They convince him that he should go to school with them, so they dress him up to hide his robot exterior, and they go to school.

SG1-1

It’s a good issue. I’m a bit lost as to why everything needed to be restarted, but what can you do? One of my favorite pieces of the issue was a panel after Brain Drain (robot dude) asks them if they could still be the person they were 10 years ago. One panel shows Squirrel Girl, looking pleased as punch, while the other shows a young man who looks slightly like Nancy. I think it’s wonderful when comics show transgender individuals as they flourish and find themselves. I think it’s important to have all sorts of diverse peoples in media of all types.

All New All Different Avengers #1

Here’s something I didn’t realize until this new comic: there’s no current avengers team. There’s the Uncanny Avengers but they’re technically called the Unity Squad within the Marvel universe. So it seems time for a new team, doesn’t it? Well, that’s what we’re going to get with this new series All New All Different Avengers.

all new avengers 1

We discover the revelation that there isn’t a current Avengers team when Tony Stark – who’s going broke and selling his properties – helps out the new and current Captain America, Sam Wilson. They spot Spider-Man, not sure which one this is, falling out of the old Stark building, where he has discovered a teleporting Chitauri potentially teaming up with the guy who bought Avengers tower. I don’t know who he is but he’s definitely evil.

all new avengers 2

all new avengers 3

Also in this issue was a completely separate story of two others who join the team, Ms. Marvel and Nova. Kamala is trying to get away from her friends who are arguing about who should join the Avengers when a huge monster comes crashing through town chased by Nova. Ms. Marvel steps in to help and they not only get the creature under control, they talk to each other, get flustered around each other, and hope they never have to run into each other again. Not likely, since they’re both joining this new team.

all new avengers 4

As far as first issues go, it was good for setting up the story. It didn’t show us everyone who’s joining the team since Vision and Thor have to join in as well. But I do look forward to seeing how this team comes together.

Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat

$

Cool fact about this comic: it’s easily the best thing ever.

Hellcat1-1

Okay, so we’re only one issue in, but holy guacamole Fangirls! Patsy Walker is craaaazy good and got me so pumped I read it three times! I know I get crazy excited about stuff all of the time, so it’s not the biggest deal when I’m excited (usually), but this got me Lumberjanes level pumped. So damn good.

The whole issue is a flashback, but Patsy Walker has an idea for super temps; an agency to help super heroes and just regular folks with powers and / or mutations get jobs. It all starts because she stops Telekinian (yup that’s the name he chose) from stealing a ton of cash from an armored car.

Hellcat1-2

Soon after, they become best friends and roommates, and it’s stupid how adorable everything is. The two of them go into a bookstore, where she runs into one of her childhood buddies; Tubs, AKA Tom. Then she finds out that someone else from her childhood is making comics that Patsy’s mum started and she is not happy. Which is very understandable; nobody wants their likeness used without their permission, right?!

Hellcat1-4

So the first issue has a lot of starts (including Patsy Walker getting a job in retail), and I’m very excited to see where they end up. The series will most likely focus on her quest to get the super temp agency set up and the stuff about her face being used for an embarrassing comic. I can’t wait for the silly hijinks she gets into!

Hellcat1-3

This book was super pretty, and very much what I look for in a comic. It’s cute and fun, but the people look like people. It felt a lot like Zodiac Starforce, actually, in it’s colors and style. There is a solid mix of realistic and beyond adorable cutesy stuff, which was exciting in all the ways. It did just come out, though, so I’m kind of bummed to have to wait another month for the second issue.

In case you weren’t sure; I highly recommend this comic, and think everyone should read it right now so I can talk about it with you, thanks.

Scarlet Witch #1

I’m very excited for this series, Fangirls. I love Scarlet Witch. I think I first met the character in Avengers vs X-Men or Uncanny Avengers (I don’t remember which one I actually read first) but I have loved her character since meeting her. So naturally when i discovered she was getting her own series, I had to pick it up.

Scarlet Witch 1

It begins with Wanda having a dream that is more like a memory. She wakes up in her new Manhattan apartment and relays her dream/memory to Agatha, a possible spirit. She also has a great quote about dreams, “You and I both know there’s no such thing as bad dreams. They’re messages our subconscious sends us, if we only cared to read them as such.” As someone who’s had a lot of very weird bad dreams lately and as a hopeful writer, I love this line.

As much as Wanda hopes her new home will come with a new life, she can sense that something is amiss in this city. She discusses her former lives, her power and how it works, and she wanders the city looking and seeing that something is not right.Scarlet Witch 2And this new Wanda? She isn’t taking anyone’s shit. I’ll let this image show you the beauty, because otherwise I might quote the whole thing.

Scarlet Witch 3

Wanda is using her knowledge to fight evil witchcraft, and begins investigating murders where the murderers have no idea why they committed the crime. She recognizes all the signs of what is happening, and knows that a Sonellion – a magic hate-virus – has been conjured and released. She fights the creature and discovers that someone has a bigger agenda. Someone is weakening witchcraft around the world.

And that is it until issue 2. But I already love this. I love the writing, I love the artwork, and I truly love the character.

Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps Issue 4

The Thors are coming, the Thors are coming!

CM4-cover

But really, the Thors are attacking the area Captain Marvel and the Banshees have hidden out, and it’s time to skedaddle. They come up with a plan; throw the Thors off with sharp turns. Have Captain Marvel lure them away so the rockets can get into the sky, and have Rhodey and Helen set up some explosions to bring them down. Survive.

CM4-1

And they do it. Kit helps them to break free of the Thors (and hopefully she won’t be punished too severely), and the Banshees (save Rhodey and Helen) head out to punch a hole in the sky. It was chilling saying goodbye to the Corps so soon after meeting them. The issue ended with what looked a lot like a series ending, and it was incredibly sad. The sergeant lets the Banshees go, and the issue comes to a close with “Higher, further, faster, more,” and the description of a Banshee. It’s beautiful, and sad, but also wonderful because they did it.

The icing atop the sadness cake, was the thank you letter at the end from Kelly Sue DeConnick. It was perfect; she thanked everyone and it was so beautiful I cried some more. The Captain Marvel comics have become something that I look forward to more than most things. I love being able to see these women kick ass, and no one writes it better than DeConnick. I’m going to miss reading her pieces monthly with Carol, but I plan on finding some of her other work, and letting that take Carol’s spot; not in my heart, but on my shelf. Captain Marvel has inspired me to be more, and go further. It makes me want to push myself, and I’m so grateful for that.

CM4-2

So thank you, KSD, for absolutely killing it with these two series. You’re a wonderful writer (nd person, it seems), and you make me want more; both from myself and the world. Thank you to the artists who made Captain Marvel’s mohawk the raddest thing around, for the colorists who made her shine, and the Carol Corps for showing the best type of fandom camaraderie. Thank you all.

All New All Different Avengers #2

So we’re back, Fangirls, to the reassembling of the Avengers. I’ll be honest, I didn’t realize issue 2 had been released until I saw it at the comic shop. Nevertheless here it is.

all new avengers 5

When last we saw our broken Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, and Spider-Man (who I’m fairly certain is Miles Morales but I could still be wrong) had been defeated by a Chitauri with superpowers, and Ms. Marvel and Nova had some awkward teenage hero moments that I loved. This issue, our defeated heroes begin to awaken with the aid of one of my personal favorites, Vision, who is part of the new Avengers team.

all new avengers 6

We learn that the man who bought Avengers Tower from Tony is named Mr. Gryphon, but he remains mysterious. Nova discovers that this Chitauri is in town and he worries that it’s the same Chitauri he once flung into the sun returning for revenge. He flies to NYC to investigate, and he must once again team up with Ms. Marvel. They get some help from the growing Avengers, which makes sense since they’re all after the same Chitauri.

all new avengers 7

In the middle of the fight, the new and amazing Mighty Thor appears to aid in the battle. Have I mentioned I love her so so much? Because I do. A lot. So everyone is fighting when Mystery Man (because even if he Mr. Gryphon we still don’t know who he truly is) arrives and opens a portal for the Chitauri to escape through. And that’s all until the next issue.

I’ll admit, even though the series is moving a little slowly to me, it is nice to see the team build itself back into being the Avengers. Also, I grabbed Sam Wilson’s new Captain America series so I can find out what happened between him and Steve Rogers.

So, that’s all. We’ll hopefully get more answers next issue.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Issue 2

Things just got super nuts in Doreen Green’s life, and not in the “surrounded by piles of acorns” way.

SG2-1

SG2-2

Also, these colors?! Rico Renzi, you are a god among colorists.

One day, Doreen is just laying in bed, sleeping, when a big friggin’ crash sends her, her bed, and Tippy Toe back in time, all the way to the 1960’s! She rummages through a donation bin in attempt to fit in fashion wise, but how on earth did this happen?! Well guess who is gunna figure it out?

To be honest, it’s Nancy. Girl has her shit figured out, and it’s awesome. She first tries to talk to Doreen’s parents, then the school, and then Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boy, and has no luck. Ya know why? Because since Doreen was sent back in time, no one knows who she is, because she doesn’t exist. What the heck.

Guess how Nancy knows that? Because Doreen is a smart cookie and happens to be in the time when they started building the building that they live in, and makes a lil’ note to Nancy, hides it in a brick, and puts an acorn on it. Nancy finds it, and is updated on the situation (and probably taken aback by the silly things good ol’ SG writes), and gets to work.

SG2-5

So Nancy does some super powered research in hopes of finding out who would take her friend and roomie away from her, and finds that it may be Tony Stark. So she heads over to Stark’s building and of course he won’t see her.

Back in the 1960’s, Doreen has found another young woman in her exact situation; like, scary exact. This girl is Doreen’s age, went to the same school, was in the same program, and is crazy thrown off by being kidnapped into the past. Realizing that there may be more like them, Doreen puts out a newspaper ad full of words like”Hashtag,” and “Selfie” in hopes of getting the attention of other people in the same situation.

SG2-7

Nancy’s hella grumped up with this situation, but becomes even more so when a giant Doctor Doom comes out of nowhere to terrorize. I think we just found out who’s behind this “sending young computer science lady students back in time” business.

SG2-9

I think my favorite thing about this issue was the clothing. Doreen was really killing it with her cute clothes and Nancy is always on her A Game. I’m really glad that these ladies show off how rad their fashion sense is, instead of just wearing the same thing all the time (thank you Erica Henderson for giving them wonderful outfits all the time and making me want to be them even more).

SG2-outfits

Of course it’s awesome and you should read it, and I can’t wait to read issue 3 and find out what the heck the idea is behind this scheme!

The Mighty Thor #2

When last we saw Thor aka Jane Foster, she was battling several things at once. As Jane, she is battling cancer and the chemotherapy treatments while also serving as a member of the World Council, who fear Odin as he locks his wife in jail and searches endlessly for this new Thor. As Thor, she faces off against Malekith, who is forming his own council of villains. Oh, and did I mention that this villains council is considering allowing Loki in? Because they are.

mighty thor 6

We enter with Loki and Laufey having….father son bonding time? Not really. Laufey is taking Loki to his test to prove himself worthy of Malekith’s council. Meanwhile, Thor is battling the new Thunder Guard set up by Odin. She gets a little help from Heimdall, who naturally knows everything and knows that this new Thor is meant to be. He sends her to safety and accepts his punishment of treason.

He sends her to Alfheim, where she is truly needed. Light elves are fighting dark elves to the last, and Thor sees how needed she is. Malekith knows she has come.

The Enchantress offers Malekith her help, but he has a different job for her. Loki, meanwhile, passes his test to the amazement of Laufey. Thor joins the side of the Light Elves when Loki comes to her wanting to talk. And issue 2 is over.

mighty thor 8

So, can Thor trust Loki? Is this Loki the usual Loki or is he the more recent Loki, the one who learned a great personal lesson and grew from it before the Secret Wars happened? Only future issues will tell.

Captain Marvel Issue 1

Guess who’s back/back again? Carol’s back/tell your friends! Captain Marvel is back with an all new team and an all new storyline, and I’m incredibly excited about it. One issue in and our girl has already kicked the perfect amount of butt; I love it.

CM1-1

Carol Danvers has taken a job as the commander of the Alpha Flight Space Station for two years; she’ll be orbiting earth and keeping it safe; making sure that space oddities (everything from asteroids to alien attack ships) don’t reach earth. Rhodey has some worries that it’ll be a boring desk job, but Carol seems pretty confident.

CM1-2

That is, until she has to have a talk about waste removal on her first day. Luckily, a group of rather large asteroids is hurtling towards earth, so she jumps at the chance of field time. After smashing the smaller asteroids and sending the largest deeper into space, Danvers returns aboard. There, she finds out that there was an energy signature on the asteroid she threw; a signature that matched the aliens who were talking her ear off about trash removal.

CM1-3

She has them put into cells, but her talk with them is halted as a much larger ship is approaching them. She and her team take out their guns and overheat their engines, and when Captain Marvel rips a door off to see who is inside, she’s taken aback, as the ship is full of skeletons, and her symbol is on the door.

CM1-4

The issue ends there, but I was nowhere near ready for that. It was beautiful and kept me on the edge of my seat. Though Kelly Sue DeConnick is no longer a part of the Captain Marvel team, I can see why she entrusted these new folks with Carol. Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have me so excited for the story they’re writing, and I’m in love with Chris Anka’s art. It’s fun to have Carol back in my monthly reads, and I hope she stays there for a long time.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Issue 3

So Victor Von Doom just shows up out of the past and expects everyone to bow to him, what’s up with that?

SG3-1

He busts through a wall, scaring the pants off of Nancy (luckily she’s wearing a skirt), and about to kill everybody, but she keeps him at bay for a hot minute. She also saves his butt twice; once from Jubilee and once from Punisher, but she tells them that it’s just a spot on Doctor Doom cosplay, and they leave him be. Nancy then convinces him to take her back to the 60’s, where Doreen / Squirrel Girl is. She tells him that she can promise that Squirrel Girl will never attack him again if he does this for her, and that it’s super important that they head out because SG is planning on attacking Baby Von Doom so he never gets so strong.

SG3-4

So they go back, and land directly in the middle of the Future Pals first meeting. They’re all realizing that they’re in the same situation, but no one recognizes anyone else from their classes. It’s explained that they don’t recognize each other because as they were erased from their timelines, they didn’t exist, so no one would notice that someone who didn’t exist went missing! It’s scary how clever that is.

SG3-3

Doom calls for Squirrel Girl, so Doreen fast changes and comes out to kick his butt. Nancy then explains the deal they made, and Squirrel Girl respects it. But when Doom blasts her across the street, things change. She saves all of the future pals by throwing them into a pool 4 blocks away, and after realizing that she can’t change the current timeline (Wikipedia says that Doom is supreme ruler and hasn’t been defeated, plus he’s super great), joins the Future Pals. It’s definitely tough to see her so dismayed, but she can work through it, right?

SG3-6

I hope so, because with Doctor Doom as a leader, the future is not at all bright. This issue was rad as heck, but I was expecting a happier ending. Maybe we’ll get lucky and the happy ending will come with the next issue. It’s intense, seeing the fighting and excitement and everything, but I am definitely worried for everyone.
